1. GENERAL: The battalion continues operations within its assigned areas of operation and specified areas within the 2d Brigade TAOI during the quarter. The one significant change in combat power has been the release of one rifle company from bridge security mission. Operations for the period consisted of ground, airmobile, mechanized and raid missions. Base of operations for the battalion for the reported period has been FSB Emory, XT702145, until 8 August, FSB Patton, XT583194 from 8 August to date with elements at PB Dragon XT636286 from the start of reported period until its removal on 16 July; PB Hunsley, XT597270 from 8 August to date: and a joint US/ARVN Night Laager Site, XT614226, from 30 August to date. Operations were conducted with emphasis on night operations. During the reported period snipers were employed with new equipment and had considerable success. Joint operations with the 2d Battalion, 49th Regiment ARVN have been stressed since 8 August.
2. SIGNIFICANT OPERATIONS: The battalion continues to exert heavy pressure against the local force and VC infrastructure in the immediate areas of operations. Operations based on intelligence from both US and ARVN agencies were conducted to interdict and destroy main force NVA/VC units. A significant operation for the period was conducted on 1 September. The forces consisting of 1st Company, 2d Company, 3d Company of 2d Battalion 49th Regiment ARVN, and Company B and Company D 2d Battalion 14th Infantry were to conduct a joint search and destroy operation in the area of Troung Lap, XT595215. Concept of operation was for the 1st and 3d Companies 2-49 ARVN moving on parallel axes from Troung Lap at 0730 hours to the east toward TRANG BAO ON, XT625227, swinging Southeast through the villages of XOM MOI (1), XT626218, and XOX MOI (2), XT617221, forcing VNA/VC in a Southeast direction into a blocking position from XT628196 to XT636200 and return to Troung Lap. The blocking position was to be positioned by a heliborne operation at 1015 hours Company B was to be combat assaulted into a five ship LZ at XT624197 and a four ship LZ at XT625199 and form in a blocking position from XT628196 to XT636200. On order, after the ARVN units passed Company B was to move on parallel routes along the same routes that the ARVN units had cleared to a PZ located at XT618216 to be extracted at 1700 hours. Company D and 2 Company 2d Battalion, 49th Regiment ARVN at 0930 hours were to recon from the night laager position XT614226 to the North East toward AP TRAI XT635243, turning south to GOC CHANG XT645236 to TRANG BOA on XT624227 and returning to the night laager. The operation was executed as scheduled with negative results for Company D and 2d Company. 1st and 3d companies moved along their respective routes as indicated and found a recent tunnel at XT624226 with the following findings; 1 M-16 rifle with 16 magazines, 3 CHICOM grenades, 2 typewriters (unserviceable), 2 M-26 hand grenades, 1 AR magazine, 100 rounds carbine ammunition, 100 rounds AK ammunition, and 5 pounds of medical supplies. Continued the operation with no further findings. Company B, after ARVN units had passed their blocking position as scheduled, moved from their positions and at 1556 hours at XT632200 captured without a fight 6 NVA from C3, 268 Regiment, and 1 VC from HOC XAN. Equipment captured 4 AK-47, 5 CHICOM grenades, 3 entrenching tools, 3 sets of web gear, 1 set of wire cutters, 5 mess kits, 3 hammocks, 12 ponchos, 1 flashlight, 2 ID cards, 300 rounds of AK ammunition, 2 pounds of medical supplies, and 43 pounds of clothing. When captured NVA/VC were resting in a bomb crater and to all appearances had just arrived there. It is assumed that the NVA/VC felt safe to move into the area that was just cleared as there was no guard posted and by the apparent surprise of the captured personnel.
3. Significant activities or occurrences during the first part of the reported period FSB Patton was built on a circular concept with 24 fighting bunkers. Patrol base Dragon with 14 fighting bunkers was built and removed. During the remainder of the reported period Patrol base Hunsley was taken over, having been built by elements of this command while Opcon to sister unit. The Night Laager position was jointly put in and is at this time still operational.
4. Summary: The Battalion has accomplished its mission in all assigned tasks. The elimination of VCI and interdiction of main force units, mostly reconnaissance units or sapper elements, has denied the NVA/VC easy access to the area. Although there were no major contacts made during the period Inclosure 1 reveals the battalions overall success for the period.
5. Assessments: Combat operations generally have been successful and good results have been achieved. The ARVN Regiment in the AO are very active, well trained, and conduct many operations. Close coordination between this unit and 2d Battalion, 49th Regiment ARVN have been established and joint operations are now a daily procedure. Close cooperation and exchange of intelligence information have played an important role in the success of operations and the success of this units mission.
